How to Unlock a Car with a Wire Coat Hanger; Just Don’t

There are a few things you can try to get into your car that might work, however, every car is different and no method is guaranteed. If your car is an older model, then it probably has the locks that sit atop the window ledge. One common practice for unlocking this type of door is using a wire coat hanger but this only works on certain lock mechanisms and not at all on the locks in newer model cars. One of the common practices is to shove a wedge into the top corner door seam and snake a hanger into the vehicle and try to pull or push the button in order to open the door. Oftentimes coat hangers aren’t strong enough and you not only risk scratching the paint but if you wedge the door open too far, you could shatter the window or even break the door itself. The other method is if you can insert the wire hanger between the rubber molding weather stripping and the bottom corner of the window and then fish around inside the door in an effort to left the metal latch mechanism. This way also risks scratching your paint. In addition you could inadvertently tear the weather stripping and damage to the wiring if you have power windows or electric locks.

Auto Trunk Release

Often time’s people will accidentally lock their keys in their car while the trunk is still open as they are loading groceries. In this situation, you may be able to move the rear seat out of the way and gain access to the rear of the car. Most cars today come with an electronic door opener and will not lock if the keys are inside of the vehicle. These devices can become a problem if they are lost, and cost quite a bit to replace. Some vehicles will not start if that device is not inside of the car, so this can add an additional set of problems.
